Gunkanjima --- the remains of Japanese modernization
About Gunkanjima (Hashima)
“Gunkanjima” is the nickname for an officially known as Hashima. It was developed by the Mitsubishi Mining Company. It is surrounded by a sea wall, and has multi-story reinforced-concrete apartments, giving it the appearance of the warship Tosa. For this reason, it has become known as Gunkanjima — the “Battleship island”.
Gunkanjima represents the birth of not only modern Japanese industry, but also modern architecture in Japan. This small island is filled with a lot of creative ideas: the first concrete apartment (named No.30) in Japan, and the first roof gardening in Japan.
We, Gunkanjima Concierge, offer you a fascinating glimpse into this piece of Japanese history.
